A thorough account of the development of the automobile

The original steam-operated vehicle was constructed by a man named Ferdinand Verbiest, who built a standard car in 1672 for the emperor of China. Yet, this was a simple toy and the design was never adapted into a form of transport.

In the year of 1752 the next development was plotted in the timeline by Leonty Shamshurenkov who designed a four wheeled carriage described as "auto-running", however it was pedal operated and was sadly never turned into an operational vehicular example akin to modern makes and models.

Then in 1769 Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot modified a horse drawn carriage into a motorised vehicle that could hurtle itself forward. Yet, this is an area of contention as there is testimony by a witness that puts forward that the automotive failed to stand up to real-life use.

The vehicle that is considered to be the first steam-powered road vehicle was put together in 1801 and was called the Puffing Devil road locomotive. This car was based upon the workings of a train steam engine yet it could not generate enough pressure using steam.

Nicephore Niepce and his brother Claude built the world's premier internal combustion engine in 1807, which was described as a Pyreolophore - the problem was that is was installed within a boat instead of an automobile. The solution to the problem was put forward by Francois Isaac de Rivaz who developed an internal combustion engine for cars - the first of its kind.

Just shy of a century later, Gustave Trouve designed a three-wheeled vehicle that used electricity, was stable on three wheels and was exhibited in Paris at the International Exposition of Electricity. As this vehicle did not use non-renewable energy resources like petrol and gas it was a major turning point in the car industry.

Regardless of the fact that the initial hard labour was completed by the largely unknown figures spoken of above, it was years later when Karl Benz got involved in the building of motor cars that the field became prosperous.

In actual fact Benz helped to develop a four-stroke gas engine in 1885, which was built in Mannheim, Germany. The basis of his company was formed on this premise and led to the sale of a brand new vehicle model a few years later.

Unfortunately few cars were sold in that early period - only 25 cars were bought between 1888 and 1893. But, the sector was not up to the standards of today and this small amount was enough to establish the company as a success.

Benz decided to implement a licensing agreement with Emile Roger, who made and sold the motor cars designed by Benz in France. It was this step forward that marked one of the primary motor car agreements on the globe and assisted the industry in its money making capabilities, as now the residents of two countries were being offered the chance to purchase a vehicle.

In the next period,the creation of large scale production lines became more frequent notably by Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory and Henry Ford. This meant that Ford could manufacture two cars in half an hour, which helped to transform them into the largest car company in the world.

It's hard to understand how this tiny commencement the giant car sector that is spread across the globe would be started. There are a grand number of facilities like satellite navigation systems, seat belts, child seats, purchase hire agreements, BMW leasing deals and diesel alternatives. Who's to say what the magical world of motor car manufacture has in store for us in the upcoming years?
