subject: Diy Spa Treatments: Creating Your Own Spa Experience [print this page]

Homemade DIY spa treatments are perfect for some me-time pampering as they provide the right nutrients for your skin and hair without the chemical components and potential negative side effects of most over the counter cosmetics. You can whip up a number of homemade blends similar to professional day spa treatments with common kitchen ingredients.

Lemon: The Wonder Fruit

Originally cultivated in Asia (many believe India to be its native land), the humble lemon quickly became an indispensable component of western kitchens. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and other valuable nutrients and they are used in a variety of skin care preparations.

Lemon juice mixed with aloe Vera makes a great skin cleanser and water mixed with a few drops of lemon essence is the perfect toner for people with oily skin. Many experts recommend lemons for hyper-pigmentation of the skin and stretch marks and they also make wonderfully energizing deodorants for the armpits or the feet.

Lemon juice also works as a great face mask for oily skin. You will need about half a cup of Fullers earth and the fresh juice of one lemon (no need to panic if you do not have fresh fruit handy, an equivalent amount of lemon juice concentrate makes a great stand-in).

For the pack, take the appropriate amount of Fullers earth (about a palm full) and squeeze the lemon juice onto it. Once the juice has been added, knead it well so that the two items are thoroughly mixed. Apply the mixture evenly onto the face (avoiding the sensitive skin near the eyes and the mouth) and allow it to set for 15-20 minutes. Finally, rinse it off with warm water for a lovely matte complexion.

The astringent quality of concentrated lemon juice can irritate sensitive skin, so care should be taken never to apply undiluted lemon juice on the face. It also makes the skin extra sensitive to the sun, so always wait a few hours before stepping out into the sun after any DIY spa treatments involving lemon juice.

The Essential Oils

Essential oils form an integral part of spa beauty treatments. Extracted from leaves, petals and fruit peels of various plants and herbs, essential oils capture nature's bouquet of delicate and heady scents and fragrances. These oils are proven to have tremendous health benefits in addition to markedly affecting a persons mood.

Mood mists are some of the simplest ways of experimenting with the mood-altering powers of essential oils. Whether you are stressed out or sluggish, these simple mixtures of essential oils in water act as an instant pick-me-up. Choose aromas such as peppermint or eucalyptus for mental stimulation and a quick mood lift, and others like lavender and ylang-ylang when you want to relax and soothe your stressed-out senses.

To conclude, holistic health and natural personal care products are the hottest new beauty buzzwords and by the look of things, they are here to stay. Homemade DIY spa treatments provide amazing benefits, including skin cleansing, rejuvenation and moisturizing, all for a fraction of the cost of the more expensive branded cosmetic preparations.
