Scotland Rugby: Godman out for six months with knee injury

Phil Godman will miss the next six months of club and international rugby action after sustaining knee ligament damage in training. The Edinburgh and Scotland stand-off has torn the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in his right knee.

Godman suffered the injury during a session on Monday and immediately underwent a scan at the nearby Murrayfield Hospital, where results showed the extent of his injury.

The 28-year-old now faces a long road back to action and will miss the majority of the Magners League season, as well as the start of the Six Nations campaign in February.

"Phil sustained the injury in non-contact training yesterday," Scotland team doctor James Robson explained. "His rehabilitation starts now. He will have to undergo surgery in due course to repair the knee ligaments.

"But the Edinburgh and Scotland medical teams will be working to deliver him ready to be considered for selection for the Rugby World Cup squad next year.

"I have seen Phil this morning and there are many examples of players returning to full international duty having sustained this kind of injury. From our own national squad Jason White and Nathan Hines have both recovered to play a full part in international rugby after ACL damage."

Edinburgh head coach Rob Moffat was also disappointed by the news, with David Blair earning a call-up to fill the void left by Godman at stand-off.

"It's desperately bad luck for Phil who has just played his 100th Magners League game for the club and is a key player for us," said Moffat. "Clearly, we wish him a speedy recovery."

Godman won his 23rd Scotland cap in last season's Calcutta Cup draw against England and his set his sights on completing a full recovery in time for the 2011 World Cup, which gets underway in September next year.
