Pros and Cons of Opening a Brick and Mortar Business Versus an Online Business

Opening a brick and mortar business is a huge undertaking that takes money upfront. You'll have to rent or buy a location and if you're selling products, you'll have to stock that location with inventory. You'll have to pay utility bills and phone bills and purchase fixtures and equipment. Finally, if you are not able to be at the business all of the time, you'll have to hire someone to run it for you.

Alternatively, opening an online business takes very little upfront capital. You'll have to register a domain name, secure web hosting, and you may have to pay someone to design a website for you if you do not possess these skills. However, with today's technology, there are many options available to build your own website without having specific skills. It is almost as easy as pointing and clicking and you're open for business.

While it is far easier and less expensive to get started in Internet marketing versus launching a brick and mortar business, the work is just as hard. You'll have to conduct market research, spend hours in front of your computer, and learn techniques that may be unfamiliar to you. However, you can do this from the comfort of your own home at any hour of the day or night. You won't have to worry about keeping your business open certain hours and you won't have to worry about securing a loan to open the doors. Your business can be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and yes, you can earn money while you sleep.

That's not to say, however, that you can slap a website together, go to sleep, and awake to thousands of dollars in your account. However, by working diligently you can carve out your own online niche that will eventually support you and your family. You will be able to make your own schedule, spend more time with your family, and do the kind of work you really care about. You'll be building something that can last forever. Best of all, you'll be able to roll over in bed on cold winter mornings when you hear your neighbors scraping the ice off of their windshields. Now, that's priceless!
