Oil Spills & Dangers to the Great Barrier Reef Of Australia

Also, Great Barrier Reef is the back bone of Australian travel and tourism revenue; divers from round the world are ready to pay anything to catch a glimpse of this mesmerizing attraction. The GBR (Great Barrier Reef) is the world's largest Reef and also registered as the world heritage site and home to thousands of marine species that are simply spectacular in its turquoise waters. It is a major piece in the collection of Australian visiting sites that sets on the quest for cheap flight fares to Australia between low cost and top airlines, and indirectly runs more industries than we think.

In the month of May this year, the GBR (Great Barrier Reef) encountered its worst fear an oil spill in the Douglas Shoals, a no shipping area! The highly restricted area for shipping was meant to be protected this way from any possible dangers posed to the Great Barrier Reef through shipping activities. However, about 2 tons of oil spilled from the 1000 tons of fuel on board a coal-carrying ship, grounded on the Australia's coral reef that created a 100 yard slick wide spread in around 2 miles area. This caused a stir up in the authorities, tourists and Marine Safety Managements of Queensland Australia.

Considerable efforts were made in a constant manner; you can say no stone was left unturned in protecting the reef from what could be an end to the magnetism of its gleaming waters and marine life of immeasurable value. The MSQ workers (Marine Safety Queensland) rushed to the spot. The measures involved containing the oil spill, sending two tugboats to stabilize the vessel to prevent it from breaking apart or further damaging the coral reef. The whole time, the GBR kept flashing up on the screens, on all news channels and websites with making many people worldwide to pray for the disaster to end without causing any damage to the Reef that is in fact, as worthy to Australia as "Taj Mahal" to India.

Only recently, in Gulf of Mexico a deep down, cool water coral reef were discovered. The discovery left the experts startled as Coral Reefs are known to be in warm water locations like the GBR off the Queensland Coast. The thriving coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico is living in almost freezing temperate. It is indeed a sure miracle in itself, precious as much as their colorful relates in the GBR of Australia. However, they shared a similar fate as that of their cousins in Queensland when the BP oil spill triggered the huge "black loss". It is expected to take centuries to heal the wounds of the ocean, yet it is too early to estimate the exact parameters of other possible damages.

For most of us, we cannot imagine Australia without the GBR, it is something passed on to us, we inherited it and so did our great fathers and great grand fathers, also we would very much like our coming generations to carry on protecting the environment as a tradition and raising a voice for it Earth is all we got.
