Facebook is particularly suited for such purposes: you can create a fan page or a group specifically for your business and you can invite fans or group members to them who shall receive whatever updates you post on that page.
Soon, with hard work and discretion (yes, you need that; you cannot just flood your friends' walls and dashboards with your status updates and tweets), your business will have a fan base of its own and you will not need to work as much on advertising. People will be re-posting, retweeting, and emailing about your online business and you can simply focus more on delivering the satisfactory products and/or services that your customers have come to expect from you.
