Experience Thousands Of Years Of Culture With Greek Island Holidays

A trip to the storied country of Greece can make for a lifetime of memories from amongst the thousands of years of culture and history that is on display. Often overlooked on a trip to Greece is the surrounding area. When booking a vacation, among the options that you may want to keep open are Greek Island Holidays. There are hundreds of islands that make up the Greek Islands, most of them uninhabited, but 160 of the islands do have permanent residents. The islands are very popular amongst tourists, attracting millions annually, but with the sheer number of options available from island to island; there is plenty of room for everyone.

The Greek Islands are divided into six groups: the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the Northeast Aegean Islands, the Ionian Islands, the Argo-Saronic Islands and the Sporades. Also add Crete to this list and you will have more options available to you than you could try to fit into a dozen vacations. Greek Island holidays will still allow the opportunity to take advantage of the variety of activities that would be available on the mainland.

Each cluster of islands will be slightly different from the others in both locale and influences. That is where the charms of each area will be evident. The Cyclades Islands are probably the most famous and popular of all of the island groups in Greece. Greek island holidays to the Cyclades would find among your options, the famous Greek islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos and Paros. These are amongst 24 of the inhabited islands in the group. The Cyclades Islands are where you will find striking images of small white churches, set against a backdrop of blue skies and deep blue seas. As well as having many interesting areas to discover and places of interest, these islands also have a very popular nightlife and entertainment scene.

The other clusters of islands each have unique features that hold a certain appeal depending on what the goal of the vacation is to be. If the desire is to stay close to the mainland, the Saronic Gulf Islands are close to Athens with easy access back and forth. The Sporades Islands are popular with travellers whose destinations are Central or Northern Greece. The Dodcanese Islands are at the far south-east of the Aegean Sea and have good proximity to mainland Turkey. Ferries will shuttle you back and forth so you could add Turkey to your list of adventures on Greek island holidays. The North East Aegean Islands are the other group that are, as the name implies at the far east of the Aegean Sea.

The largest of all the Greek islands is Crete. This is the last stop in the Mediterranean before reaching Africa. Crete is almost a country to itself. There are many desirable locales on Crete, each offering the potential for rather different Greek island holidays. With a variety of stunning beaches and relaxed luxury resorts, Crete can be perfect for a quiet and relaxing getaway. If a party atmosphere and up-tempo holiday is what you are looking for, then a bustling nightlife can also be found on Crete.

No matter what your preference, looking into Greek island holidays can make for the perfect getaway for couples or a family looking for a unique vacation experience that will create a lifetime of memories.
