subject: Monty Panesar Rejuvenated [print this page] Cricketer Monty Panesar has instilled himself as a fan favourite since his series winning display against Pakistan in 2006. Born in Luton, Bedfordshire in 1982, Monty rose through the Northamptonshire youth teams and England Under-19s before rising to fame as a valued left-arm spinner for England. He played in the 2007 Cricket World Cup and the 2007 series against the West Indies where he received a man of the match award for the third test, becoming the first English spin bowler in ten years to take ten wickets in a match. His impressive performance throughout the series against the West Indies ultimately earned him the man of the series award.
A dip in performance led to Monty being overlooked for Englands tour of South Africa, but he has employed his time wisely, spending the winter going back to basics in South Africa, where he has been playing domestic cricket for the Highveld Lions. If Lions coach Dave Nosworthy is to be believed, Panesar could prove a valuable asset in Englands Bangladesh series. He has 15 wickets in six matches for the Lions and has been committed to improving his all around game.
Monty has cited his decision to play for the Lions as part of a process to regain his spot on the England team. He has also moved from Northamptonshire to Sussex in English county cricket, and hopes playing a key role for Sussex will help impress selectors and get him closer to a spot back on the England Team.
Montys selection for the Bangladesh series would be welcome news for his extensive fan-base, who have grown to value not only his talent, but also his often comical fielding style and heartfelt celebrations.
