The awards are based on the popularity of these cities, according to users comments, reviews, and favorites.
TripAdvisor spokesperson Jean Ow-Yeong noted that "whether travellers are looking for a grand annual vacation or a quick weekend getaway, they can be inspired by hundreds of incredible travel destinations as identified by TripAdvisor's community of travellers."
TripAdvisor now operates sites in some 30 countries, including in China as daodao.com. For tourism industry professionals, they run a dedicated division providing access to their millions of monthly visitors.

Topping TripAdvisors Travellers Choice Destinations this year are the perennially popular London, New York City, Rome, Paris, and San Francisco, in that order. The Top 5 in Asia were listed as follows: Siem Reap, Beijing, Shanghai, Chiang Mai, and Male, in the Maldives.
TripAdvisor visitors to Chiang Mai noted that the city and her environs offer the fortunate traveler historic sites, delicious street food, and a good place to bathe and feed an elephant. Recommended destinations include Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
Chiang Mai is also celebrated for her temperate climate, international flavor, unique culture, and diverse nightlife. A short one-hour flight from Bangkok, Chiang Mai has long been considered one of the most livable and delightful cities in Asia.
