However, a person would be pretty hard pressed to list a drug that could not be found there. The southwestern US is a major drug trafficking location, with large amounts of drugs shipped into the area for the purposes of being sold. It is also a major distribution point with many drugs sent there, only to be sent out to other parts of the country. Most of the drugs sold in the southwest US are done so by foreign drug trafficking organizations. The majority of the drugs shipped into the area also come from nearby bordering countries. The violence surrounding the southwest US drug trade is a significant threat to this area. Murders and kidnappings are unfortunate but not rare.
One drug which poses a significant risk to the state is methamphetamine. It is very highly addictive, can cause rapid physical and psychological problems and violent reactions amongst users. Methamphetamine is not only shipped into the southwestern US for local distribution but also sent to other parts of the county. Cocaine and heroin are also smuggled into this area in high quantities. As with most other drugs coming into this area, some of them are sold locally, while some are shipped out to other parts of the region and throughout the country. Due to the easy access to this and other dangerous drugs (including the ever-present alcohol), Alcohol Treatment Centers are crucial in combatting the plague of substance abuse that runs rampant in this part of the country. Local law enforcement is focused on curtailing drug shipments brought in from nieghboring countries and also those shipped to other areas from there. However, this is an ongoing and challenging battle. The drug smuggling operations in this part of the country are often very sophisticated and organizations use various criminal techniques. They may ship some of the drugs into the southwestern US via trucks and/or other types of commercial and/or private vehicles. Other times they are smuggled in via a 'mule (a human being).' Once the drugs reach their location, they are sold by street gangs and other criminal groups. Because smuggling and distribution operations are so vast and entrenched, it is very difficult for local law enforcement agencies and even federal ones to completely erase the drug trade or even to get a firm grasp on it, though some progress has been made.
One of the consequences of the ever present drug trade is a high rate of addiction to these substances, which can be dealt with by the presence of many Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Centers. Drug addiction may be a perpetual problem in this part of the US, but there is hope.
