subject: Realize Your Dream And Make A Change In Your Life [print this page] Tesco is a U.K.-based retailer, and the third largest in the world, with stores in 14 countries. Their stores range from the compact convenience stores to big box superstores. Their tagline is "Every little helps".
Although Tesco's slogan was designed by marketing mavens who were trying to brand this behemoth to appear more personal, there can be deeper meaning-and value-to be found in these words. "Every little helps" can serve as a reminder that it's all the little things that you do and see every day that truly make a difference in your life. So many actions are taken for granted, because they don't seem all that important-like making a phone call that you've been putting off, going for a brisk walk or run, applying for a new job, or simply testing out a new business idea that has been rattling around in your brain. Life is made up of tiny pieces in a massive puzzle. Even the smallest part contributes to the final result.
A lot of people seem to be waiting for that magic person or miracle to step in and make life better. There are no such things. The magic is inside of each of us. It's the energy that pushes us to try harder, even when we're feeling completely spent. It's that little voice inside that reminds us that "good enough" is neither "good" nor "enough".
If you've ever fantasized about your ideal life, ask yourself what you can do to get closer to achieving that vision for yourself. Every time I watch a good movie, I catch myself thinking about being an actor. At the moment, it seems like a brilliant idea. Then I think, "Now what have I done every day until right now to take me in that direction?"
My answer is always, "Nothing."
It's a fleeting thought, a brief fantasy that didn't warrant the effort for me to pursue an acting career-or any of the other notions that popped into my head during brief moments of inspiration.
If you've been thinking about changing careers, but feel overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, break it down into smaller tasks. Identify the career or job you want. Be clear about why you want it. What are your expectations? Then map out a strategy for getting that job, starting with preparing yourself to be a qualified candidate. Research potential employers. Talk to people in the field. Do your homework and, along the way, you'll make connections.
You don't take one giant leap and make a change in your life. It's what you do on a daily basis that matters. Focus your efforts on building towards a dream, one little step at a time. Start right now.
What can you do today to move you closer toward realizing your dream?
