Otoplasty For Children With Charge Syndrome

Otoplasty is a form of plastic surgeryOtoplasty is a form of plastic surgery. Some people may disagree with the use of plastic surgery on children. In many cases, it is obvious why we should disagree with something like this. There are other obvious cases where we can agree with it. We would obviously agree with a child having plastic surgery who has a severe deformity. What about those who have something like cupped ears from a genetic syndrome like that of CHARGE? A simple pinning procedure may save them years of embarrassment.

Children with the genetic disorder called CHARGE have already had a rough start. Some begin life with heart surgery, kidney problems, and an inability to swallow correctly. As they grow up, they might end up having both hearing and sight deficits. With all of these problems already present, why would we stop them from fixing a simple issue like cupped ears?

One reason parents might resist an Otoplasty procedure is because they cannot afford it. Insurance might consider it cosmetic and not let it go through. Sometimes this procedure can be medical, though. If a child's ears are cupped enough or stick out enough, they might start to fold as the ears grow. Not only is this embarrassing, but it can also impair the hearing even more than it might already be impaired.

Whether your child has CHARGE syndrome, Downs Syndrome, or no syndrome, consider having your child's ears pinned if they are a major issue. Some kids, even those with other major problems perhaps can deal with this seemingly insignificant one. It might be those who otherwise have everything going for them that cannot handle this one issue. Whatever the case, the effects of a problem like this can go beyond what we can see. If there is too much teasing, it could lead to more serious issues beyond just embarrassment.

If your child is suffering physically or mentally from ears that stick out, call your doctor. They may be able to put in a referral for an Otoplasty for physical or emotional reasons.

If you go on a website for a plastic surgery group that does this procedure, you will be able to see the change that can be made in kids. You will see that it does not change who there are. It helps people to see them for who they are rather than be distracted by their ears because they stand out for some reason.
