subject: Want To Maximize The Life Of Your Bearing And Reduce Maintenance Costs? [print this page] Maxmize the life of your bearings and reduce maintenance costs by using lubricants that have the right physical properties, have been thoroughly tested, and are proven to dramatically enhance bearing performance, like DuPont Krytox synthetic lubricants.
Why Krytox for improved bearing performance?
Krytox oils and greases are not hydrocarbons; they are made from fluorine, carbon, and oxygena chemical typically referred to as PFPE (perfluropolyether).
Because Krytox lubricants are not hydrocarbons, they cannot burn nor do they oxidize. In a bearing, this means that there are no particles being formed, no varnish deposits on the rolling elements, and limited loss in lubrication performance over time.
Primary Benefits of Krytox
Thoroughly tested and proven to provide excellent performance for rolling element bearings over a wide range of conditions
No hydrocarbons means the lubricant life is dramatically extended
Superior performance with lower wear and higher load carrying capability
Lubricant life of 5-50 times greater than can be achieved with hydrocarbon-based lubricants
Hydrcarbon Grease versus Krytox Lubricant At a High Temperature, after only a Few Hours:
Tested and Proven Performance
Beyond the exceptional high temperature performance, Krytox PFPE lubricants also outperform hydrocarbon lubricants in a wide range of standard lubricant tests. Following is a summary of some common tests showing the performance of Krytox lubricants vs. an equivalent hydrocarbon lubricant.
4-Ball Wear Test
The 4-ball wear test is used to evaluate the anti-wear properties of lubricants in sliding contact. A rotating ball is run against a cradle of three stationary balls under uniform conditions. The result of the test is a wear scar, and for purposes of this test, the smaller the wear scar, the better. Hydrocarbon yield a result of 0.69mm while Krytox lubricant only yield 0.36 mm of wear scar.
Falex Pin and V Block Test - Very High Pressure Capable
To determine the load carrying capability of a lubricant, a pin is rotated between two v-blocks until failure. The load at failure indicates the relative load-carrying capability of the lubricant.
ASTM D-3336 STANDARD TEST FOR LIFE OF LUBRICATING GREASES AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES
In this test, a bearing runs lightly loaded at 10,000 rpm for 20 hours at a specified temperature, followed by four hours shut down and cooling off. This cycle is repeated until failure. The longer the test can run, the longer the life of the grease.
The results of the ASTM D-3336 test show that Krytox grease lasts anywhere from 5 to 50 times longer than standard hydrocarbon-based greases. In your plant, this translates into fewer bearing failures, longer lubrication intervals, and less maintenance.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Krytox lubricants have been thoroughly tested and proven to provide excellent performance for rolling element bearings over a wide range of conditions. Because Krytox lubricant does not oxidize, the lubricant life is dramatically extended. Standard lubricant tests also demonstrate that Krytox lubricant delivers superior performance with lower wear, higher load carrying capability, and lubricant life 550 times greater than can be achieved with hydrocarbon-based lubricants.
Krytox oil is available in viscosities from ISO Grade 5 to ISO grade 1000. Krytox grease is available in the same range of viscosities, a standard NLGI 2 consistency, and a variety of additive packages to address specific application conditions.
