subject: Online Yearbooks: Memories Go Hi Tech [print this page] Little did we know when we were tagging real photos and selecting spots for them in a template and packaging up hard copy photographs, templates and copy in one large, white envelope per page that shipping things off by snail mail a week before deadlines was soon to become a memory. In those days of hard copy everything we could never have begun to imagine online yearbooks!
The arrival of the digital camera was magic. No longer did we have to physically crop photos with corner marks on the photo part of the photo we wanted to use. Now you could crop via a software program. Photos were attached as jpegs and sent directly to the yearbook company with template # for that page. No more envelopes. No more photographs. No more tagging.
Copy was sent as an email. Templates purchased as software from the yearbook company allowed actual insertion of the copy. Word count and measure of font were eliminated. Typos caused by typing and retyping were avoided and spellcheck caught most of them.
Wow! Didnt we think we had arrived? We had no inkling that hardcopy year books were about to become dinosaurs.
In this day of high mobility in the workforce, graduates of high schools, colleges and universities move from city to city and even country to country. Hardcopy year books are not portable and thus, not popular. There will always be a market for hardcopy yearbooks in school libraries, school offices and police departments.
With ever increasing use of mobile devices such as tablets, smart phones and laptops, more and more people want electronic versions of important papers like: deeds, wills, warranties, manuals, reference books, novels, and yearbooks. That way they are always with them and they can refer to them at the touch of a button.
Online yearbooks are more than convenient. They are also cheaper as you are eliminating printed printers costs and materials. Amazon recently announced that sales of e-books more than exceeds the combined revenue from both softcover and hardcover books. With this trend to online reading, its little wonder that yearbook companies are selling increasing numbers of online yearbooks.
Online yearbooks also have more flexibility in visual presentation. It is now possible to do animated covers. Instead of team photos video clips of teams in action can be included. In this way, online yearbooks are so much more than their hardcopy predecessors.
