PPCB goes tech-savvy: To calculate medical waste online

PATIALA: Punjab Pollution Control Board, PPCB, can now find out how much waste is being lifted from Rajindra Hospital by the trucks, which lift hospital waste, and that too online.

A special software has been installed in about four trucks that are supposed to lift hospital waste from the Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. It is being done on a trial basis by the authorities. This software will enable the trucks to give out the weight of the hospital waste being lifted.

An inspection of how medical waste is tied up in polythenes and thrown away was conducted by a team of PPCB under the supervision of Punjab Pollution Control Boards chairman Ravinder Singh and member secretary of PPCB Babu Ram. The team had gone to the hospital to see how the waste is disposed off.

XEN of PPCB Tajwant Singh stated that a barcode sticker will be pasted on every packet in which medical waste will be put by staff from the Rajindra Hospital that disposes off the waste and this will be done to enable the PPCB in finding out that how much waste is being dumped every day. This practice was not being followed earlier. The PPCB has already issued barcode stickers to the hospital staff.

The software will not only let the PPCB know how much waste is being dumped but will also tell about how much waste was disposed off by a department. At present the weight of the waste inside a truck is just guessed as there is no method that can tell the exact weight.

It was also informed that there are about 55-60 trucks that lift medical waste in the state and out of all these trucks, only four trucks have been fitted with the special software on a trial basis. If the trial proves to be successful then other trucks will also be fitted with the software. The software has been tested at the hospital today.
