A Christmas Garden

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas is always a satisfying destination with its colorful blooms. However, the center becomes even more enchanting during December with the Luminations event. Twinkling holiday lights and luminaries light up the gardens in festive style. A selection of live performances is scheduled for each day of the event and seasonal food and beverages are readily available. This is a particularly fun happening for the kids who have the opportunity to make crafts and meet Frosty the Snowman. Best of all, theres no entry fee for guests who donate a can of food at the door.

Strolling Through Christmas Lights

Another fun family event happens at Zilker Park with the Trail of Lights. This is one of the biggest holiday light displays in Central Texas and its free to the public. Along with the gorgeous lights, attendees have a chance to mix and mingle among vendors at the end of the trail. Dozens of elaborate light displays make this an event that no visitor should miss.

Kicking Off the Holiday Season in Style

Visitors can also journey to nearby Buda to enjoy the annual Buda Fest event that kicks off every holiday season. More than 100 craft vendors, a parade, carnival and live music make this a lively place to welcome another December.

The holidays are almost synonymous with shopping, and visitors to Austin can get a head start on tracking down unique Christmas gifts. The Austin Shop Crawl lets everyone shop at local stores with a discount. Purchases made in connection with the shop crawl also benefit the local Toys for Tots organization. This is a great event that happens throughout the month of December and allows visitors to discover the many retailers that are unique to Austin.

Sing with the Symphony

Carols are a festive addition to any holiday gathering. Thats why Austin Symphony Orchestra presents a Sing-a-Long program every December. Well known holiday characters like the Grinch and Santa have been known to put in appearances at the performances, and everyone gets into the holiday spirit by singing some of the most beloved carols of all time. Although participation isnt required, its definitely recommended as this event is fun enough for Ebenezer Scrooge to enjoy.
