subject: Road Rage Can Lead To Criminal Acts And Loss Of Car Insurance [print this page] We all know that driving a vehicle can be a stressful experience, and nearly all drivers have gotten frustrated behind the wheel at some point. But, it is very important to avoid engaging in aggressive driving behaviors, such as speeding, running red lights, quick lane changing and failure to yield. Often, drivers are in a hurry, and it is at these times that people tend to violate standard traffic laws that could result in an accident and possible injuries and of course, an increase in car insurance rates.
But also, anaggressive driving act can trigger a disproportionate response, which sometimes evenescalates into road rage, a criminal act of assault, which may stem from a confrontation that occurred on the road. It could also result in a loss of car insurance due to negligent behavior.
The Automobile Association of America (AAA) Foundation'sAggressive Driving updatefound that aggressive driving behaviors are a factor in up to 56% of fatal crashes. Additionally, nearly90% of driversview aggressive driving as a very serious or somewhat serious threat to their own safety.
Most people believe they drive aggression-free. Quite often they dont realize that when another car carelessly cuts them off, or nearly causes an accident, that their response is often obscenity-laced, or results in rude gestures or long, angry stares, or they may simply mutter their disapproval under their breath. These are all forms of hostile behavior demonstrated while we are on the roads and highways.
A few tips on how to avoid aggressive driving
Don't offendothers who may merely have made an unintended mistake
Avoid cutting other drivers off and apologize if this is the case
Avoid tailgating and honking the horn
Avoid making inappropriate or offensive gestures
Don't engage in driving behaviors that may impair judgment and lead to an accident or hostile engagement with another motorist
Steer clear of aggressive drivers by slowing down or turning onto another street
Avoid eye contact with a driver engaging in hostile acts
Seek help if another car begins a chase by driving to a safe/crowded location or by dialing 911
Behavior modification can result in all parties becoming calmer and more relaxed
Leaveenough time to arrive at a destination instead of being hurried, which can lead to accidents
Take a deep breath and remember escalating a situation will only make things worse
By acknowledging that others can make mistakes, often unintentionally, we can all reduce the amount of situations that can lead to aggressive driving, or possibly escalate into road rage with dire consequences.
