Best Treatment for Keratosis Pilaris
Are you troubled by rough bumps on your skin which seem to suddenly appear, causing some amount of discomfort? These rough bumps, resembling goose bumps, tend to appear on the upper arms, back, thighs, buttocks, and legs, and sometimes, though rarely, on the face giving the skin a red, inflamed appearance somewhat like chicken skin, by which name this condition is commonly known. Though more than 50-60% of the world's population is affected by it, it is a harmless condition. Moreover, it responds to simple home remedies which are best for its treatment.
Chicken skin, or Keratosis Pilaris as it is known medically, is a genetic condition. In normal circumstances, the skin has the ability to exfoliate itself, but if this does not happen naturally, the excess keratin or dry skin cells accumulate at the base of the hair follicles, causing the underlying blood cells to dilate, and become reddish and give rise to tiny bumps. People living in dry, cold climates are more susceptible to it as are women in the middle-age group, particularly pregnant women.
There are various sub-categories of chicken skin depending on where on the body the bumps appear. All of them can be kept under control by simple treatment using ingredients from the kitchen; however, treatment has to be very consistent and regular in order to check the condition, which tends to reappear after some time if the treatment is stopped.
Several lotions and creams are available in the market for treatment of this condition, which resembles acne or eczema. Chief among these are Tretinoin, a Vitamin A acid preparation sold as REtin-A and Aristocort, which is a cortico-steroid. A third, popular preparation is a combination of Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. However, home remedies for this condition are equally efficacious and less expensive, as a trial would readily prove. Some of the more common home remedies are as follows:
A mixture of sour cream and granulated sugar applied gently over the affected skin, is one of the most effective treatments for chicken skin. If cream is replaced with curd or yogurt it would work equally well, the reason being, that the lactic acid present in these milk products, acts as a natural exfoliant, removing the dead cells from the skin's surface, thus preventing inflammation and irritation and giving the skin a smooth texture. This treatment is to be carried out 15-20 minutes before a shower and the skin should be gently patted dry. Thereafter, Vitamin E oil or cocoanut oil should be applied, again very gently, over the area to soothe the skin.A good amount of omega 3 or 6 fatty acids in the diet, will help to keep the skin soft and prevent recurrence. The best source of this is fish like salmon, mackerel, and also nuts, like walnut etc.
