Playa del Carmen Condo Sales & Increase in Canadian Tourism

A recent trend in Playa del Carmen condo sales, spearheaded by resort developments like The Fives, has been to sell condos in a boutique resort setting, offering vacationing families a way to generate a nice return on their vacation property. This market has a lot to benefit from the Mexican federal government's effort to draw more Canadian tourists to the country.

The Director General of the Council of the Mexican Tourism Board (MTB), Rodolfo Lopez, said the Canadian tour operators have an interest to sell more packages to this country thanks to the diverse range of tourism options. In a working trip to Canada, Lopez Negrete had meetings with executives from major tour operators in that country as Sunwing, Transat and I-Travel 2000, who recognized the importance of Mexico as a destination for Canadians, and indicated a desire to strengthen direct promotion.

Half of the lure of Playa del Carmen condo sales in a luxury resort setting like the Fives is the income they can bring through rentals to other vacationers. (The other half is the enjoyment of vacationing on a resort, in a condo you own.) More direct promotion of Mexico on the whole will increase the number of Canadian vacationers interested in packages such as these, increasing already high occupancy rates from carefully selected hotel management companies. Combined with a direct-to-the-client sales approach used by developments such as the Fives, the increase in Canadian interest in Mexico can only be good news.

Over the past couple of years, the Canadian dollar has been moving up towards par with the U.S. dollar, and since about mid-2010, has been hovering at par. This fact has left Canadians with my buying power abroad; Canadians have already begun to enjoy more vacations which they can now afford more easily. As the nearest country after the U.S., Mexico offers an inexpensive option with many high-quality vacation destinations, such as Playa del Carmen.

For this very reason, as well as a healthier recovery of the post-recession home market in Canada, Canadians have already been a disproportionately high number among the tourists and real estate buyers in places like Playa del Carmen during 2010.

In 2010 the number of Canadian tourists visiting Mexico reached more than 1.5 million, representing an increase of almost 20 percent over the previous year and 28.5 percent higher than that reported in 2008. 2011 is expected to see another increase of 15 percent over 2010.

The Playa del Carmen-Cancun corridor is the favorite destination within Mexico for Canadians, at 710,695 tourists during 2010, almost 50% of the total.
