Medical insurance is more of an essential than a luxury in today's world. Whether you purchase it for yourself or your family, or if you have a company plan to cover you, it's better to know you're covered then risk relying on long waiting lists at the NHS.
If under duress choose the best
Private medical insurance used to be something for the rich and famous, but with the strain put on the NHS system to cope with an ageing population and ailing economic climate, they are fighting a losing battle and can't possibly offer the best healthcare. It doesn't add up and it's unfair to expect the professionals to do so. Luckily there is the choice of going private and it doesn't have to cost a small fortune for you to be able to offer your family the best. Businesses have long offered private care as an incentive to attract and retain the best employees and now smaller companies can also offer benefits to their work force. More insurers have recognised the need to create products catering to a smaller enterprise, which means that they too can reap the rewards that diligent employees will give them. And with that came the options for the private customer. Not everyone can afford the whizzes and bangs of dental costs and well being, but with the options that most insurers offer with the deductibles, there is something for everyone. You just have to ask.
The bad news first
Of course, if you suffer from an existing ailment, this is unlikely to be covered in your medical insurance. Other exceptions that won't be covered are chronic illnesses, meaning that they are incurable, this is what life insurance covers and you may also want to consider. Also not included in the cover is if you have caused the sickness yourself through drug addiction, or self-inflicted injuries, war risks or if you have been pursuing hazards. AIDS and HIV are not covered by the policies nor are infertility, normal pregnancy or a sex change, cosmetic surgery, organ transplants, kidney dialysis and experiment treatment of new methods and drugs. And last, GP services, accident and emergent, outpatient, dressings and mobility aids. It's quite an extensive list that isn't covered and some insurers may have premiums if you want some of these included such as mobility aids.
The good news now
But medical insurance does cover you for everything else and this list is far more extensive than the exclusions. What's more is that if you do have to contend with being diagnosed with an abnormality or are need in surgery or break a bone and you have to spend some time in a hospital, you can choose where you wish to stay and be treated, and hopefully you'll have a private room with an en suite bathroom and satellite TV if you're really lucky. If you need to see a specialist you will jump the queue, no waiting lists and furthermore, there will be a whole range of curative drugs and treatments available to you that aren't available on the NHS. What you really get is peace of mind that you or your family member is receiving the best possible treatment.
