3. Carnival of Tenerife, Spain (March 2 ~ March 13, 2011)
Being different from the noble temperament radiated from the "masquerade ball" in Venice, regional diversity would be one of the most apparent features for Spanish carnivals. The carnival that comes up in early spring is recognized as the first significant festival of the whole year in Spain. Various masks, clowns paper-made giants, monsters, etc. are all leading roles at the carnival ceremony. Different areas usually have different details on Carnival celebration. For example, at the Carnival of Navarra City, usually performers will play as those traditional mythical characters to tell everyone old stories that have been spread over one thousand years; whereas the carnivals at Tenerife on Canary Islands and Las Palmas are both famous for their great dancing scenes and firework displays.
Among all wonderful carnival celebrations within Spain, the most well-known and the most characteristic one must be the Carnival of Tenerife. In particular, the Tenerife Island, where the City of Tenerife is situated is the largest island of Canary Islands that locates about 1000km south to Iberian Peninsula. Also due to the possessions of both the City of La Laguna (World Heritage Site as declared by UN) and the grand carnival there, the island has become a shining pearl among numerous islands within Canary Islands.
The annual Carnival of Tenerife will open on March 2nd this year and will last until 13th. On the first day, all the streets will be warming up from the afternoon on and huge number of people will start to rush for seats on the sidewalks for watching the opening ceremony for celebration. When the night of the next day falls, eleven fully dressed-up parade teams will keep dancing the hot samba while marching on the beautiful tree-lined boulevard along the coast till late night. The third day will be the day featured by unique Spanish cultural colors, on which everyone will be able to watch a number of performances including operas, musicals, etc. The whole carnival will reach a high tide on the fifth day when the big explosion of joy will be set off over the city. In the morning of that day, all crowded streets are fully immersed in the hustle and bustle while the grand parade named "The End of The Canival" will begin on the stroke of 4 o'clock in the afternoon and last until nightfall. After that, all the people can move on to watch the spectacular firework display over the harbor.
Keyword: burning the fish
"Ash Wednesday" is what Spanish people use to name the Wednesday that marks the end of the long carnival season. Their traditional custom on that day is to make a ridiculously huge paper-made color-painted fish as a symbol of meat, in turn place it on a float then burn it into ashes finally. One thing that should be mentioned that the Carnival of Tenerife will move on in the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday) just because Canarian people would never consider such joys of six-day long are fair enough to neutralize their addictions to hustle and bustle. As a result they just continue enjoying their big feast till the end of the weekend!
4. Miami Carnival, the USA (February 25 ~ March 13, 2011)
By looking around the world, the carnival held in Miami might not be as famous as those ones like Nice and Venetian Carnivals, but it is indeed the largest celebration for Latin culture in the country. During the two weeks between February and March, various fantastic celebrating activities, including beauty pageant, walking race, artistic and jazz performances, cuisine competition, domino competition, golf league and so on will keep going in Little Havana, the famous settlement of Latin immigrants in Miami. The Miami Carnival of this year is scheduled for between February 25 and March 13. In particular, scores of revelers of different ethnic groups from all over the world gather together in the grand party of Kiwanis Club of Little Havana. All local people and visitors can enjoy abundant global delicacies as much as they can while listening to the splendid Latin and jazz music.
