Valentines Day with a diffence: Online shoppers go crazy for cats

A survey performedon over 6,000 online shopsduring the Valentines periodlast year yielded some remarkable results indeed. What was once a day for exchanging romantic gifts with loved ones- flowers, chocolates, perfume, jewellery and all the ususal presentshas beentoppedby an online sale majorityfor our favourite felines. Most of ushit the internetand went shopping online for pet treats and nibbles, diamante collars and ID tags and clothing accessories; mesmerised by the diverse choice of productsfor ouranimal friends.

We've always been a pet-loving nation, but is this a sign of things to come for the ecommerce industry? More and more business goers are turning their efforts towards setting up an online shop due to the ease, accessibility and affordability of running their services on an ecommerce software platform. For less than 20 a month, anyone can havea perfectly good ecommerce website that comes with all the things you need to trade over the internet. Those of us with cats and dogs would certainly agree!

We saw a similar level of response at Christmas when shoppers took to the net to bag their last minute buys. Online sales exceeded shop owners' expectations, and with Valentines Day not too far behind, we are looking at a very bright future for the e-tail market. Of course the ecommerce sales were more concentrated on Valentines Day compared to the festive period; something we can liken to a short, sharp spurt of online shopping.

With all this talk about pets over dresses, that's not to say the female audience went without. An observation based on the same cross-section of online shops revealed that men spent more than women on buying Valentine's gifts for a possible number of reasons. Could it be that women anticipate a present without giving in return, or does it illustrate a case of last minute shopping on the behalf of men?

Designer brands and underwear accounted for the bulk of online sales, where women were also found shelling out on special lingerie as well as treats for their pets. Whatever the ratio of male to female spending, one thing's for sure online shops based on an ecommerce software platform are reaping the financial rewards.
