Wideband global SATCOM systems are a step towards a global communications flood. From the top levels down, there is the potential for exponential growth within an industry that many people rely upon to run a normal life.
What SATCOM systems are providing in terms of both long and short term returns are the likes of which have never been seen before. For the short term, you have the benefits of armed forces that have already been described. In the long run, the technology that can potentially filter down into the mainstream could mean an end to the communications deadlock many countries now find themselves in. Africa is a great example of where satellite communications technology can really make a difference. Many countries on the African continent are lacking the infrastructure to hold normal telephone communications. Although at first the technology would come with a price tag that they could not afford, it would only be a matter of time before the scaled down technology would be affordable to the everyday man or woman. As with many technologies that we now take for granted, the armed forces are leading the way in pushing the boundaries of what the world thinks is possible.
