GLOBAL EARTH HOUR
With the global lights-out being around the corner, on 26th March the whole universe will celebrate the 4th Global Earth Hour,celebrated annually on the last saturday of March by switching-off all the inessential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30.This year a plus sign has been added to the 60' logo which solicits a commitment from people all across the globe to go beyond this one hour and incorporate a positive act in everyday life which can benefit the environment and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
All the five continents including the G-20 countries, thousands of cities viz. Mumbai, Delhi, Hong Kong, London, Rome, Sydney, Singapore, Dubai and many iconic landmarks, namely, the world's tallest buiding- Burj Khalifa, Dubai; Eiffel tower, Paris; India Gate, Delhi; Times Square, New York;Mount Rushmore, South Dakota;The Empire state building, New York;Niagara Falls, Canada and the list goes on, will go dark in wake of the Earth participating TV channels include ABS-CBN, Philippines and Cartoon Network will halt transmissions during this one hour black-out.
Many public figures such as Wasim Akram, the veteran Pakistani cricketer; Vidya Balan, the critically acclaimed and the winner of this year's Filmfare award for Best Performance in a lead role award, and so forth have proclaiming to the universe to take part in this Earth Hour campaign by switching-off lights of their respective houses. Vidya Balan,the brand ambassador of the Earth Hour India, made an appeal to the whole world, lately, "For Earth Hour 2011, I pledge to not just switch-off but to go beyond the hour.To be mindful of conserving resources, everyday, not just for an hour."
Common people can reduce carbon emission by replacing just one 100W incandescent lamp with a 20W compact fluoroscent lamps(CFLs) and curtail annual carbon dioxide emission by 84kgs on every replacement.Also you can replace old electrical appliances with energy effficient 5 star-rated ones and reduce your emission.Organisations should opt for energy efficient building design that help reduce environmental impacts of energy production and the government should introduce policies and incentives at local and national level to promote use of renewable energy in homes and businesses as being propagated by the Earth Hour initiative.
Earth Hour was conceived and conceptualised by World Wide Fund For Nature(WWF) and the Sydney Morning herald in 2007, but it was adopted as a global event only in 2008 to raise awarness towards the imperative to act over the crucial issue of climate change.
Delhi, the capital city of our country, is all set for the Earth Hour Saturday with showy posters, documentaries and SMSes being used to disseminate the message of climate change.It is estimated that last year Delhi saved 300MW on this day.Abhishek Bachchan was last year's ambassador.
