subject: The Monster Smell [print this page]

There are many causes why your washing machine will smell. Sometimes it does not have to do with how we operate the machine but it is due to some unavoidable situation like no total drainage because of the anatomical structure of the machine. However, here are some of the causes why your machine will stink.

One cause of a smelly washing machine is the utilization of low quality detergent soaps. Liquid detergents as well as those for colored clothes are not machine friendly substances. Even if they are fragrant and scented, all of them can contribute to the smelly washer. All of these detergents do not have bleach as part of their active components and some washers did not really experience being added with bleach. As a result, bacteria will definitely thrive in this moist environment and eventually smelly washer will ensue.

Super low temperatures for water utilized during laundry can also contribute to the smelly nature of your washer. It is because low temperatures do not have the capacity to break down the accumulated grease from dirty clothing. Small stains and oils from clothes will make your washer full of grease and low temperature water will not help ease this problem up.

When you wash laundry below 60 degrees, it becomes conducive for bacteria to grow. But, we all do want to save energy that is why we utilize low temperature water to wash our clothes. However, our washer will pay the price and it will become a stinky washing machine.

Some washers will have a filter designed only for the fabric softener and this in turn will accumulate lint, pieces of paper, hairs and other substances that can contribute to the smelly odor and make the washing machine stinky. The best solution is to remove the filter out and clean it every once a week.

Incomplete drainage of water from the washer can also make your machine stink especially when you wash mildew smell clothing. If the water accumulates in these lesser accessible places, it will become stagnant and contribute largely to the smell. It is one of the main reasons why your washer will be smelly.
