Ways to Save Money When Moving

Moving is time-consuming and it can often be frustrating and expensive. The good news is it doesn't have to be. There are plenty of ways to save money when moving house. Furniture removals can go smoothly and be cost effective with a little planning.

Get Rid of What You Don't Need

Everyone has things they don't need. One of the easiest ways to save money (and time) when moving is to get rid of that surplus. Sell books, clothing, furniture and toys that you don't need. This will save some on the moving cost and may even help pay for some of it. You can also donate things to a local charity if you'd rather have the tax benefits. Remember that if you haven't used it in the last three years, you probably never will.

Compare Costs

Contact three rental companies and three removal companies to see how much it costs to rent a truck and how much it costs to hire movers. Once you've determined what's most affordable, evaluate the costs again. For instance, can you really move all of your furniture into the truck yourself? If you do, will it take longer, thereby making it more expensive to rent the truck? Be aware of hidden costs: mileage, weight, gas and the fees if you're dropping the truck off in another city. Some companies also charge fees if you have to pack last-minute items. Be sure to add these into your estimates.

Box It Up Yourself

Acquire boxes from grocery stores or other locations and label them with the name of the room the items will be going. Often, you can get boxes for free before companies get rid of them and they may hold extras for you if you ask. If you can organize the boxes so they can be removed easily and go to the appropriate rooms, it will save you time and energy later, even if it takes time early on.

Boxing the items yourself will save money and it will make it more organized for you than if you were to just toss them in any box. However, make sure to wrap breakable items well and mark any box that has them as "fragile."

Move as Soon as Possible

One of the easiest ways to save money is to move as soon as possible. If you take a long time moving, you'll have to pay for the cost of living at both locations. This includes rent, utilities and other bills, so swift removals are important. If you can't move everything at once, you may also have to pay storage fees, which will also add to the cost of moving quickly.
