Watering Plants When On Holiday

Plants are a lovely thing to have around the house and garden; they add some colour to what could otherwise be a bleak outlook and their flowers provide us with some fragrant scents around the house. When on holiday it is difficult to keep your house plants alive if you don't have anyone who can go in and water them for you. But there are some things you can do to prevent your plants from dehydration or even death, and hopefully they will still be alive on your return; having fragranced the house delightfully ready for you to be back at home!

Try re potting the plants into large and non porous containers, as the larger amount of soil will hold moisture for a greater period of time, and mean that you can leave for a few days without having to water the plant. This way if you are just away on a long weekend, your plants will survive your trip.

Buy some watering stakes which distribute water on a regular basis. They have a reservoir that you can fill up before you leave to ensure your plants stay watered. Alternatively you can make your own drip system by punching some small holes in the side of a water bottle and putting it next to the plant in the pot. If you are doing this make sure you try it a few weeks before you go to make sure that it is fully working, otherwise you might come home to some seriously dehydrated plants and flowers.

You can purchase special polymers that, when mixed with soil, hold the water and release it slowly back into the earth. These are readily available at plant stores and garden centres and work really well if you will be away for a long period of time.

If you are going to be away for a long period of time then make sure your home is secure otherwise, in the case of a break in, you may not be able to claim on your Home Insurance. Shut up windows and doors and make sure that you hide the keys from sight.
