Touring in Jerusalem: A glimpse into its shared heritage

Jerusalem the largest city of Israel, is geographically poised between the two seas namely the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. In spite of being torn apart by the age old political and religious conflicts the country offers a fascinatingly multifarious tourist package. It is a city marked by the multiplicity of various religious faiths. Touring in Jerusalem thus makes the way for a glimpse into its heritage shared jointly by the Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Places attracting tourists abound in number and variety if one has to include all of them in accordance with their historical and religious importance. However some of the notable options for the tourists include the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Ecce Homo, Mount of Olives, Temple Mount and Dome of the Rock. Ecce Homo and The Church of the Holy Sepulcher are not only the holy shrines of the Christians, but are also historically enlightening - bringing out the important phases of Christ's life, resurrection and death. Mount of Olives, which forms a part of the range of hills surrounding the city, bears testimony to an interesting Christian belief. Christians believe it to be the place visited by Christ before his arrest and fall. Temple Mount, the first temple built by King Solomon, is also renowned for both its religious and historical significance. It is held in sacred esteem by all the three leading religious communities thriving there. From the point of view of Islamic faith, the Dome of the Rock is significant as it contains the footprints of its founder- Prophet Muhammad.

Besides the above mentioned spots which are located in Jerusalem's Old City, the bottom of the Temple Mount leads to the historic Western Wall, which is an important Judaic religious place. It attracts Jews who gather there to worship, pray, contemplate and wish.
