Treating ADHD Will A Multi-Treatment Approach Produce Better Results?

It is easy to get comfortable with one way of treating ADHD and forget about the other options that might be out there. While this may be the case there seems to be an every growing body of research suggesting that a multi-treatment approach to ADHD is the best formula for success. Medications such as prescription stimulants are currently the first line of defense in treating ADHD in both children and adults. While this may be the case one expert was recently quoted as saying "pills do not substitute for skills."

Why is this?

Prescription medications for ADHD produce results by attempting to rebalance the brain chemicals dopamine, norepinephrine, and in cases where depression or self esteem are paramount serotonin. This rebalancing act only levels the neurobiological playing field allowing those with attention deficit disorder to develop the skills they need to succeed. Prescription medications such as Ritalin and Adderall won't help them overcome challenges in the areas of prioritizing, time management, organizational skills, and using memory aids. In other words balancing neurotransmitter chemicals is only half the battle leaving half of the canvas of success unpainted. Some people know what to do but have not been able to implement the changes because their ADHD symptoms have so severely damaged their organizational and planning skills. Once their symptoms start to disappear, they can start to put the effective behaviors they already know to work.

Benefits of treatment will vary from person to person

For example one out of every four people who try prescription medications will not see the results they had hoped for. In these cases a non prescription alternative may give them the needed results. But generally speaking a team approach that combines several different treatment methods and is tailored to each persons unique situation and symptoms will produce the best results. One person may find that prescription stimulant medications combined with counseling, stress management, diet, and exercise produce the best results. While other may find that a non chemical approach consisting of homeopathic remedies, stress reduction, cognitive behavioral counseling, and vitamin supplementation does the trick. Still other may feel more comfortable with a blended approach consisting of meditation, yoga exercises, combined with prescription medications.

As you can see there are many options and really the only way to find what works best for you or your child is try a few different combinations keeping a written account of your results. Nevertheless, a multiple treatment approach will tend to produce more continuous relief from symptoms in the event one or more of your treatments stop working, are no longer producing the levels of results expected, or circumstances arise that calls for suspending use of one or more treatments.
