MBA Admissions 2011: AICTE approved, University or Autonomous?

MBA has become the most sought-after qualification in India. There are more than 1800 B-schools in the country. So, which B-school should you join? This is the toughest question for an MBA aspirant.

The B-schools in our country can be segmented into three categories: AICTE approved B-schools, University B-schools run by State or Private Sector Universities, and Autonomous B-schools. The IIMs belong to a different league, as they are autonomous institutions under the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

The admissions to the AICTE approved B-schools are currently in process. The recent verdict by Supreme Court has cleared the road for the B-schools that are under the umbrella of AICTE. The AICTE had issued a list of regulations for B-schools on 28 December 2010.

The doors are also now open for admissions to the private sector universities and autonomous MBA schools.

To help you in further deciding what kind of B-school you should aim for we present you this exclusive article on the different segments of B-schools. For this we will look at the B-schools under the above mentioned categories. This will help you in deciding which kind of B-school you want to gain admission to.

AICTE approved B-schools: Today, you will find there are various colleges that offer MBA degrees but what makes the difference is the AICTE approval. All India Council for Technical Education is a national level government body that gives approval and certification to MBA Institutes in India after surveying their standards and quality of the technical education. Hence, the students should try for colleges that are AICTE recognised.

Some of the B-schools belonging to the top 50 are: XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, XIMB, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI New Delhi, Welingkar Mumbai, BIMTECH Greater Noida, TAPMI Manipal. These B-schools are the torch bearers of management education. For admissions to these aforementioned B-schools you should have a high percentile score in CAT exam.

Some of the leading ones are: Jaipuria Institute of Management, Asia Pacific Institute of Management, IFMR, Suryadatta, IILM, NDIM, and many others.

The advantages of studying in a AICTE approved B-school are the following: You can get Education Loans from national and private banks, the industry recognition is there. It is easier for you to apply for management jobs in Public Sector Undertakings. And also if you want to go for further higher studies, it will be easier for you.

There are many advantages of AICTE approved B-schools, but these B-schools charge high fees from the students, as the courses are in self-financing mode. As these B-schools do not get any government funding, the burden is passed on to the students. The fees ranges from Rs. 8 lakh to 12 lakh for the 2 year full time PGDM course.

Before joining: The following steps may be useful: Check the approvals and affiliations of the B-School thoroughly. Management as a subject comes in the domain of technical education; hence the B-School must be AICTE approved.

University B-schools: The B-schools under the universities are also an option for MBA aspirants. Most of the major universities in India have a department of management studies or faculty of management studies. The leading University B-schools are JBIMS, University of Mumbai; FMS, University of Delhi; UBS, Panjab University; FMS, Banaras Hindu University and others.

The major advantages of pursuing MBA from these university B-schools is that their fees are highly affordable. At FMS Delhi the fees for two years is around Rs. 21,000. At JBIMS Mumbai the fees for two years is Rs. 2 lakh. These B-schools are comparable to the IIMs in terms of faculty and industry exposure.

The competition is also very high for these B-schools as there are lesser number of seats compared to the AICTE approved B-schools.
