The summer is a great time to be outside. But if you are like the vast majority of us, you cannot be outdoors all the time. Thankfully, there are some things you can do to invite all the best parts of summer into your condo or loft. Following are five easy updates you can make.
Go bright
Look on your walls and at your furniture. If you see a bunch of dark colors, the summer is a good time to make a change. Replace dark-colored paintings with brighter versions; nothing says summer like a watercolor painting. The same goes for pictures. And even if you have dark-colored furniture, a light-colored blanket or a couple of light pillows will brighten it immediately. To round everything out, don't forget a bouquet or two of flowers.
The mood
There's a certain mood that goes along with the summer, but all those reminders of winter do nothing to nurture the summertime feeling. Take down heavy drapes. Pack up heavy rugs. Stow your thick blankets, and if you have a wood-burning fireplace, get rid of the wood.
The air
One of the easiest ways to increase the flow of cool air in your condo or loft is to make sure your ceiling fan turns counterclockwise. That will push cool air toward the ground. If you have an air conditioner, make sure the filter is clean and the system is operating at the optimum level. It's a good idea to have someone come and check your air conditioner before the heat of summer arrives. If there's a problem, better to know about it before you need the air conditioner.
The deck
Some condos and lofts do not have a deck. If yours does, make sure it is ready for summer. Sweep off the remnants of the spring, set out a small table and chairs and put a grill out there. Round out the feel with a plant or two.
Clean the windows
People who have drapes and shades probably see their windows more in the summer than at any other time of the year. Opening the window coverings or removing them altogether is a good way to let light in. But don't let dirty glass hamper your view. You'll be amazed at how much better clean windows look, especially if you're used to living with dirty windows. One of the best ways to clean glass is with newspaper. Wet it with a vinegar and water mixture and go to town. Scrub until the streaks are gone.
