Cancun may be one of Mexico's hottest vacation spots, but that wasn't always the case. What is now a tropical paradise, a haven of fun in the sun and hard-partying night life, has a much humbler origin.

Until the mid-20th century, Cancun was a deserted island made up of narrow sand dunes separated from the rest of the Yucatan peninsula by two inlets. The region's coast was made up mostly of mangrove swamps.

The region was largely uninhabited and relatively inhospitable. Indeed, on old maps it is identified as "Kankun," said to be the Mayan phrase for "nest of snakes." The Mayans had mostly abandoned the region leaving only small settlements on Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.

Yet Mexico saw potential for tourism gold in the area's untouched jungle and beaches.

Spurred by studies in the 1960s that identified tourism as an excellent source of revenue and new jobs, the Bank of Mexico chose Cancun as one of five locations to begin development of tourism destinations. Cancun, along with Ixtapa, Los Cabos, Loreto and Bahas de Huatulco, were chosen to become tourism-based cities built from scratch.

In January 1970, when the project began in earnest, in the region now known as the Riviera Maya, Mexico had little in the way of infrastructure. Within four years, the first hotels and an international airport would open in Cancun.

From those humble beginnings, the city would grow into one of the hottest tourism destinations in the world. Today, a Cancun tour will turn up more daytime activities and nighttime hot spots than anyone could hope to fit into one vacation.

Located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is in the perfect location to allow tourists to explore one of the world's largest rain forests, lounge on beautiful white sand beaches, visit ancient Mayan ruins or partake in any number of underwater activities.

The city's unfettered access to the Caribbean Sea and the adventures it offers above and below the waves. Whether spending the day relaxing on the beach with an ice-cold beverage, enjoying the tropical breeze and soaking up the sun, or entering the underwater realm by snorkel or scuba, Caribbean waters are picturesque and inviting.

Under the water, visitors can experience teeming and exotic sea life first hand while diving on the world's second-largest barrier reef system.

And if the sea does not coax the adventurer out of them, the jungle is only a short distance from Cancun and offers on-land activities every bit as exciting as those found off shore.
