In the world of watch brand marketing, it is fair to say that it is all about the timing. Get it wrong and your image suffers correspondingly. Not only that, but you will have to suffer endless barbs about timing being, just maybe, not exactly your strong point. Get it right and you can sit quietly back and bask in your enhanced credibility, wearing a satisfied if not self-satisfied smile.

It is a fair bet that they are smiling at TW Steel right now, after the near miracle of timing they have just engineered. The brand has a long association with the daredevils of the track and in mid-April, the Dutch over-sized watch brand signed up a new star, racing driver Dario Franchitti, as their new brand ambassador.

Five weeks later, they unveiled the new "Dario Franchitti" edition, tricked out in the Italo-Scot's blue, red and green racing colours an amalgam of the two countries' flags and with the numbers two and seven (Franchitti took the number 27 to glory in 2007 in the IndyCar Series title and the Indy 500) highlighted in green and the ten (his current race number) in red .

Five days after that, dashing Dario led for 155 of the 200 laps to clinch his second Indy 500. Again, it was all about timing; Franchitti had just about enough fuel to crawl over the line ahead of the pack.

As for TW Steel, well perhaps understandably the champions of big is beautiful could barely contain themselves. The watch, based on the brand's TECH-style, which features a bezel connected to the case with pillars and engine screws, starts retailing early next month. The timing is perfect.
