The Western Indian Railway (WR) is one of the most busy rail networks in India. Large numbers of trains move from this zone and take the passengers to their respective destinations. Mumbai which is also known as the economical capital of India enjoys the authority over the Western railway as it is the headquarters. The headquarters of this network is located at Church Gate (Mumbai). The Western Railway also looks after the western Line of the Mumbai suburban railway system. This complete zone is separated into 6 divisions which are as follows Mumbai, Bhavnagar, Ratlam, Ahmadabad, Rajkot, and Vadodara.
The establishment of this network took place on Nov' 5 1951 it is considered to be the golden day in the history of Indian Railways. It formation of this network took place by merging several state-owned railways with Baroda, Bombay & Central India Railway (BB&CI) and Rajputana, Saurashtra, & Jaipur Railways. In the year 1867, the first suburban service was started in Mumbai this service began with steam traction. This network was later extended till Churchgate by the year 1870. There were as many as 45 trains which were employed in the two directions to provide service to round 1 million passengers round the year.
It was in the year 1928; when first time an electric train started between Church Gate and Borivali. Some of the important railway lines that come under the jurisdiction of Western railways are Ahmadabad Vadodara, Ratlam - Mumbai Central, Palanpur Ahmadabad. Western Railways covers a large area which includes the state of Gujarat, the eastern side of Rajasthan, a part of Western Madhya Pradesh and the coast of Maharashtra. There are numerous ports and on the western coasts which are served by Western Railway.
Some of the most important ports are Kandla, Porbandar, Okha, Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Bhavnagar (Gujarat). This network generates huge revenue to the Indian Railways. In Mumbai, the suburban section which starts from Church Gate to Dahanu Road covers a long distance of 120 kms, and connects 38 stations in whole. Something important about the Western Railway Network is that this is one of the most electrified railroad systems of the Indian Railways. Due to this The Western Railway is very important railroad system in India.
