Copyright (c) 2010 Linda ColeWhen we are in our teens we usually have a favorite pop star or actor whose poster we have on our bedroom wall. We daydream about meeting them and make up all sorts of romantic scenarios in our minds about what it would be like to be their girlfriend or boyfriend. Years ago it was David Cassidy lead singer with The Patridge Family who had adoring female fans and today it is Justin Beiber. The names change but the emotion felt by young people towards these untouchable icons is the same.It is a fantasy and we generally outgrow it once we start dating. But what of those people who never grow out of their adoration for celebrities? They become STALKERS.These are people who have not been able to differentiate between reality and their own dysfunctional and delusional world. They are prepared to stalk their celebrity victim for as long as it takes for him or her to fall in love with them. This is why they can be so dangerous because they truly believe it is their destiny.A celebrity stalker usually suffers from mental-illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression and erotomania ( the belief that the victim is in love with their stalker). They operate alone and most likely have never had a romantic or sexual relationship. This is why they seek victims that are out of their reach. Their conflict is that they fear getting too close to someone so their fantasy world becomes a kind of safe haven. If you think they are somewhat of a contradiction you would be right. They put their celebrity victim up on a pedestal so high they cannot ever reach them. The problem for celebrities is that this type of stalker can stay in their lives for a very long time. Ten years is now considered an average amount of time unless they have been stopped or incarcerated. These delusional stalkers generally do not work so they can be available to stalk their victims' day or night. When it comes to stalking their prey these guys are the best. They could teach a private investigator a thing or two as they keep a constant vigil wherever their victims are. It becomes a power game to them as they take pleasure in outsmarting their victims by turning up at the restaurant or nightclub they may be frequenting. In their bizarre thinking they see their ability to second- guess their victims as a strong connection of love between them. Of course this is only ever in their mind.It is often difficult for a celebrity to define who out of their devoted fans is a stalker until things turn nasty. This change can come about by a court order being slapped on the stalker by the celebrity or a new boyfriend or girlfriend in the famous persons life.At first any contact from the stalkers victim will seem like a declaration of love to them. But when it becomes clear the celebrity is not interested anger in the way of rage plus a need to get their point across can turn this delusional stalker into a violent maniac. Their safe fantasy world has been shattered by reality and they cannot cope. So they send threatening notes, go to their victims home and as history has shown try to physically hurt them because they have been denied their date with destiny.Being a celebrity has its positive benefits but it also has a negative side That is the nightmare often lived at the hands of the celebrity stalker.
