An introduction to living consciously - Open your mind and choose to live your life

Hello,my name is Leigh.

Before

I had nothing to complain about. In fact, it was tough to come to terms with not being able to find meaning in the privileged life I led. The problem was, I existed in that world of normality' where survival was pathetically easy and questions were rarely asked simply because there was no need.

I became an unhappy reflection of the people I surrounded myself with. Witnessing them jump from one meaningless desire to the next, never ultimately satisfied, yet always in the process of satisfying themselves. Absent of consciousness, I joined in.

I would drag myself through the 8-6 work schedule to make someone else rich, avoid eye-contact with anyone on the tube who may want to start a conversation, spend huge amounts of money on designer clothes I didn't need and waste countless hours watching TV/browsing facebook with my evenings.

I bought the latest gadget, I wore the latest brand, I drove the smartest car.

The difference was I felt no obligation to live like this anymore. I could see the attraction of it but when I saw past the smoke and mirrors in my life, I knew I wasn't doing anybody justice. I felt a sense of guilt and shame that I was incapable of seeing things the way many people do, yet an overwhelming sense of excitement and anticipation for living my life consciously.

I knew I neededa change.

"Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves." Henry David Thoreau

After

Therehas beenno stand-out moment or vivid awakening' which led me to change my life, just a build-up ofa desire to changethat I allowed myself to embrace. This all came together aroundJuly 2010.

I sold everything. Absolutely everything apart from a few clothes, my wash gear and my laptop. I quit my well-paid job in the city, put my mini cooper on eBay, found a replacement for my flat and headed out into the country to take stock and decide what I was going to do from there. This was the most liberating moment of my life. Better than any deal I've made, any purchase i've bought and any relationship i've had.

I wanted to break myself down to the point where I could establish exactly who I was, how I wanted to live and what i wanted to experience.

Now

Now, i'm beginning to live my life exactly as I feel I should be. Things have become clearer to me and my will is stronger. I am beginning to put together a clear set of values that I want to live by and a set of meaningful goals to achieve before I die. I'm very much thinking outside the box' with everything I do and every decision I make.

However, this journey isstill very much in its early stages, I have some interesting plans to experiment with my life and I hope to record them through this blog. I'm not claiming to know the secret behind living consciously and true contentment, but I am going to push as hard as I can for my definition ofit.

So, my goals for the immediate future are the following:

- Continue to live a minimalist lifestyle.

- Challenge myself at every opportunity.

- Question everything I would usually do without thinking.

- Find my definition of being content.

- Continue to build ahealthy income without sacrificing my soul'.

- Make a lasting difference to the lives of my family and those from less fortunate parts of the world.

I'm eager to hear from any of you looking to make positive changes in your life which enable you to live consciously. Please feel free to subscibe to my blog here and follow me on twitter here.
