Most start-ups or even struggling retailers blame the state of their business on their inability to meet the right kind of wholesalers. They believe that, if they could get their hands on a wholesalers list or names of pre-verified distributors, they would be set for life. Nothing could be further from the truth. While having a reliable supplier is essential, it alone does not help create a successful business. Lets look at some of the other factors apart from wholesalers that contribute to success.

Finding the right product to sell is also key to profitability. Not every product allows competitive positioning or even competitive pricing. The trick is to play to your strengths. If you have an eye for fashion, try clothes and accessories. You will be able to spot a good deal from a mile away. It could be at a store closeout, a distress sale, or even a sidewalk sale. If you know the product in question, you will be able to stay away from counterfeits and spot a deal when you see one.

Buying the right product from the most reliable wholesalers is also not enough if you are not reaching the right target market. You need to be able to choose a forum that attracts the kinds of people who will be interested in your product. A product that needs to be touched and felt is perhaps better positioned for local sales on a local platform, like Craigslist, while a known but unique artifact can get a better response (and price) in an auction mode, like on an eBay kind of platform, where the worlds richest can view it. Only after you have the right price for the right product and are speaking to the right customer can you hope to get a sale. Even if one of these essential elements is missing, the magic will not happen.
