subject: Dell 15r Review [print this page]

Dell's Inspiron range is made up of the company's entry-level consumer notebooks. The Dell15R belongs to Dells Inspiron notebooks, which always have be the middle-of-the-road workhorse by the company. Dell's Inspiron 15R is a 15in laptop with an appealing design and a well rounded configuration.

Dell Inspiron 15R Specs:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit

4GB, 1,333MHz DDR2

Corei3 or Core i5 Processor

15.6 inches Screen

4 USB 2.0 (1 USB/eSATA), SD card reader

The new Dell 15R is built around Intel's Core i3 and i5 processors, with a handful of upgrades available for hard drives and basic discrete graphics. It's powerful enough to handle most demanding tasks for some time to come. The lid of the Inspiron 15R comes in a choice of black, pink, red or blue and the deck of the chassis surrounding the keyboard is chromed.

The Dell 15R's 15.6-inch LED backlit display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is nice for watching high-def content. The screen has a native resolution of 1366x768. That's fine for Web surfing, DVD playback, and online streaming from sites such as Youtube or Netflix, but it's not true 1080p HD. Both colour accuracy and contrast were good, although the glossy finish reflects your surroundings, which can be distracting.

The Inspiron 15R comes with a roomy keyboard that has firm yet easy to press buttons. Due to the Inspiron 15's 15-inch form factor, it has a full-sized keyboard with a dedicated number pad on the right. The keyboard on the other hand has decently sized keys, including the big right Shift keys, but the four arrow keys here are slightly smaller than normal. A large touchpad allows you to perform various gestures with two fingers: it supports two-finger scrolling, rotating and pinching.

Although the Inspiron's weight of 2.6kg means it's unlikely to be taken on the road regularly, its battery lasted just under three and a half hours. The combination of smallish battery and Core i5 hardware means that we only got 92 minutes of battery life in a continuous test. We would have hoped for 110 or 120 minutes.

The Dell 15R is a well-rounded notebook, thanks to its features for a reasonable price and great performance. It has plenty of RAM and hard drive space and it's also very comfortable to use.

Pros:

Good keyboard

Solid construction

Cons:

Too many built-in advertising pitches

Lack of extra ports
