Australia Zoo: A Prosperous Wildlife Realization

He crouched in scorching temperature and sloshed in dense dirt for the purpose of one goal: because he was committed to the success of all animals plus the natural world. Especially the crocs, because as Steve mentioned: "Crocs rule!"

Slowly but surely Bob built a shed, and then a home, that the family still are living in to this day.

The Simple Start

Steve's Father, Robert (Bob) Irwin has been a passionate man who settled the costs by being employed as a plumbing technician, but, much like Steve, his enthusiasm was for wildlife and the natural world.

Bob was a known herpetologist which had a love for lizards and venomous snakes and his Mum, Lyn cared for hurt and orphaned animals. Steve used to state his Mum had been the Mother Teresa of wildlife rehab! There was not a place within their residence that did not house a captured reptile or rescued pet. Even in the past, Steve and his naturalist parents were Australia's first Wildlife Warriors!

In 1970, the family made a life altering choice to move to Beerwah on the stunning Sunshine Coast, in Queensland. Little did they know it, but Bob's desire running a reptile park could quickly come true and be converted into the spectacular Australia Zoo!

In 1973, the gates of the Beerwah Reptile Park opened and highlighted crocs, lizards, snakes and also several other animals the Irwin's found making use of their bare hands or rescued.

It may well be tough to imagine now, but only 4 decades before, Australia Zoo was sitting on just four acres. Every day, the car park would overflow with cars as Mums, Dads their children and buddies wandered around the park in amazement. Just like it happened then, the zoo continues to wow visitors as they pour through one of the six booths that replaced the single gate.

He was a true blue Aussie bloke whose energy and enthusiasm shone through in all he did.

Everything began in 1992 when Terri went to the Beerwah Reptile Park. It had been evident from the way he held and mentored Bindi, just how much he loved becoming a Father.
