Activities For Kids - Keep Them Busy When It's Raining!

Spring and summer are good seasons for kids; plenty to do playing outside with friends and having fun. However, when winter comes around and the colder parts of fall, it is more difficult to keep them happy and occupied. The last thing anyone wants is miserable restless kids!

Fun activities for kids are pretty much essential at that time of year, and they need to be kept entertained. One way to do this is to have an indoor treasure hunt, where children can look for clues and then get to the treasure. Treasure doesn't even need to be much, just the activity is fun enough. Give clues on subjects you know your kids have studied at school to help them remember facts and figures. Keep a box of treasures on top of a wardrobe where they are not likely to be found, then you can surprise the children at the end of the treasure hunt.

Art activities are always fun, and if you start off with some paper in different colours, they can draw shapes on the back, cut them out, and stick them on the white paper to make all sorts of things. Cardboard boxes, stuck together, and then painted, can be made into buildings, robots or any thing their imaginations can dream up. If you keep all boxes and packets that come into your house; perhaps put them in a bag in the loft to keep them out of the way. Then you have something you can draw on when the weather is bad and the children need to play indoors.

You could start off an activity day with a movie, to inspire them. Ask them to make up their own stories that can be on a similar theme. They can make a collage or paint a picture of the stories, and explain them to you.

Dressing up is another fun indoor activity. Why not read a book to them and then ask them to re-inact it for you? That can keep them busy and allow their imaginations to flourish. They can make up stories, that perhaps continue from the book, or that the book has inspired. By allowing children to use their imagination, you are giving them confidence in themselves; by suggesting they put on a play you are encouraging them to work together and develop teamwork skills. These are useful not just in school but in the world outside the classroom.

The best way to help your kids have fun when it is rainy outside is to let them come up with some ideas. If they are old enough, let them write their idea on a piece of paper and you can pick an idea that you find practical. That way every day can be fun!
