Surrounded by emblematic landmarks all around, Zocalo also has the ceremonial centre of Mexico - Tenochtitlan, which is also the capital of the Aztec empire. This place dates back to the time of Emperor Moctezuma, when it was surrounded by palaces and temples, some of which are still there.
Cenotes: Derived from the word Cenote, which is used only in Mexico and is in turn derived from 'dzonot' meaning sacred, and very important to the Mayans as one of their sources of supply of water, or a religious place for performing sacrifices. Basically, Cenotes are caves that have fresh water, and are located in the Karst geological landscape of the Yucatn. They were formed as a result of erosion of limestone. There are many such caves in Yucatn that are unique in many ways for tourists to discover, while the total count exceeds 10,000, although many are still unexplored. The most renowned ones are those of the Chichen Itz, Zaci in Valladolid and X'keken near Valladolid.
