Edinburgh is a lovely city to visit all year round, but if you're a bit of a culture vulture you definitely want to book your tickets for the summer months. The historic Scottish capital opens its doors wide when the sun comes out, and between June and September you'll find a massive range of creative festivals taking place. From film to comedy and theatre to dance, you'll be spoiled for choice when looking for performances to enjoy. Don't forget to try and fit in some time sightseeing though, as Edinburgh also features a gorgeous range of attractions from Edinburgh Castle and the Scots Monument to the Camera Obscura.
The party spirit that comes part and parcel with creative festivals is another reason for dropping in on Edinburgh, and this is felt most strongly during the International Festival in August. However, there's plenty of fun to be found through the rest of the summer months, so it may be a good idea for you to choose your visit based on which cultural sector you're most interested in. For example, early summer is the best time for film buffs and book fans are better off making sure their in town in the last weeks of August. Unless you have plenty of money put aside for an artistic extravaganza, it's unlikely you'll be able to stay in the city for all of its cultural offerings. So narrowing down your choices with a little research is a great idea. The first festival to arrive in Edinburgh each year is the film festival (EIFF), which typically takes place in the latter half of June.
Drawing international stars of the screen to the city and featuring a large variety of premiers and provocative cinema, the film festival offers the chance to mingle with some of the film industry's most passionate members. In June, you'll also find the Meadows and Leith festivals taking place, so you'll have the chance for some off-screen cultural pursuits too.
As July begins to draw to a close the city begins to prepare itself for the Edinburgh International Festival and its close relation, the Edinburgh Fringe. These festivals run near simultaneously and feature everything from classical dance from the Festival to new cutting-edge shows from up and coming performers as part of the Fringe.
A number of other festivals overlap during the month of August, including the International Book Festival where you'll find many workshops, talks and signings from esteemed authors and the Jazz and Blues Festival, which offers many live gigs and performances and typically takes place in the first week of August.
If you're planning to visit Edinburgh to make the most of one, or all, of its excellent festivals, then you're well advised to make sure you book your accommodation with plenty of time to spare. While Edinburgh is home to many hotels and hostels, it does become extremely busy during the summer months and it can be inconvenient if you are unable to find somewhere to stay in the city itself. Book Edinburgh city centre hotels nice and early if you want to ensure you're at the heart of the action.
