Amazon Kindle Makes Great Christmas Present This Year

If you've been trying to think of a good Christmas present for the book lover in your family, maybe it's time to get that person an e-book reader. While there are several options on the market now, it's hard to go wrong with the Amazon Kindle. Their new models are very affordable, and there are lots of other features to make this device a winner. Let's take a look:

Easy-to-read "book like" screen

One of the things you'll notice when you turn on a Kindle is there aren't a lot of bells and whistles on the screen--there's not even color! The low-glare Kindle screen is designed so you can read comfortably in bright sunlight, indoor light, and anything in between. It's not back-lit, like a computer screen, so you can't read it in the dark, but this is exactly what makes it easy on the eyes. It's more akin to reading a real book than gazing at a laptop all day. Grab a kindle cover with an attached reading light (lots of them available), and you'll be able to read it anywhere, anytime.

Compact and lightweight

After years of turning my nose up at e-readers in favor of "good old paperback books," I was finally sold by the idea that I could take dozens (thousands!) of books with me when I traveled, and they'd all be stored in this lightweight device. The new Kindles are smaller than a paperback book, but they can hold thousands of hours' worth of reading material. It's a great gift for anyone who travels, even if it's just to go camping a couple times a year.

Long-life battery

This was another selling point for me. I'm an Apple fan (macbook, imac, iphone, ipod!), but I ultimately chose the Kindle over the iPad because I liked the idea of only needing to charge my e-reader once every couple of weeks. I didn't want something that sucked down more power and required daily charging. With the kindle, you can "read War and Peace on a single charge."

Affordable price

This was another reason I chose the Kindle over the iPad. I didn't need all the fancy apps that come with the Apple e-reader (as I mentioned, I already had all those things on my other Apple devices); I just wanted to read books. This is what the Kindle is designed for, and it does it well. It also does it for less than $200 (less than $150 if you get the least expensive model).

Ease of downloading books

You don't ever have to hook the Kindle up to your computer if you don't want to. The wireless comes without a monthly fee (big plus!), and you can connect to Amazon's "whispernet" to shop for ebooks and download them to your device.

All in all, the Amazon Kindle makes a fine Christmas present for book lovers of all ages. Even non-techy people who aren't gadget-fanatics have been known to love this e-reader. Plus, once you buy someone a Kindle, you'll always know what to get them for Christmas and birthdays in years to come (more ebooks!).

Enjoy, and happy holiday shopping.
