Why You Should Avoid Artificial Sugars
This Holiday Season!
Where are artificial sugars found and what is their purpose?
The first artificial sugar, sacchrin, was produced in the late 1800's and became
well known during WWI when there was a sugar shortage. From sacchrin, came new
sweetener products includes aspartame (Equal & Nutra Sweet), Asesolfame K
(Sunett, Sweet One) and Sucralose (Splenda). They are used
in highly processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie processed foods, other
diet foods, and soda. They are also packaged like sugar to use to sweeten our
foods and drinks and to cook with. They are meant to satisfy the "low calorie"
and "low sugar" diets, which millions and millions of people are flocking to,
but are they healthy for you and do they help you lose weight?
How your body reacts to artificial sugars:
When you consume a product labeled low fat, low sugar or low calorie you can be
sure that you are also consuming artificial sugar. These sweeteners taste
hundreds of times sweeter than regular sugar and confuse the brain, sending
messages that your body is consuming enormous amounts of sugar. Your enzymes in
your body begin to act as if they are ready to help your cells absorb sugar.
When your cells do not get that sugar, but instead an artificial sugar, your
brain senses that it is not satisfied and is fooled into craving more
carbohydrates. Often times you will end up eating more food and gaining more
weight when consuming artificial sugars. Food producers are able to advertise
products that have great taste and low or no calories or sugar but they don't
tell you that you probably will increase your cravings for food and gain weight
instead!
What are some of the side effects of these artificial sugars?
Artificial sugars can be toxic to our bodies and should be avoided. The use of artificial sugars have been linked to cancer, intestinal
disorders, dizziness, headaches, nausea, skin rashes. Aspertame has been linked
to problems with the nervous system, immune system, depression and male
infertility.
To maintain your ideal weight and improve your health, you should use regular
sugar (organic is better) in small amounts and consume a well balanced diet.
Keep a bowl of fruit salad and other raw fruit in the house for those times that
you have a sugar craving. The sugar from fruit is better for you than the
processed, refined sugar we are used to. If you balance your diet, you will
notice that the sugar you consume will not cause as much of a sugar crash and
your cravings will not be as prevalent or as strong!
During the holidays, make sure that you offer a bowl of fresh fruit salad as a
desert alternative to the sugary cookies and pies. You should enjoy a sugary
treat once in a while, however, because that is part of the joy of the holiday
season. By eating a small bowl of fruit with that cookie or piece of pie, you
may be satisfied sooner and not overindulge!
