subject: Why Simple Toys Are Often The Best Toys [print this page] Deciding what toys to buy for the loved children in their lives is often not an easy decision for parents and grandparents to make. With so many choices today, it can often be overwhelming.
Technological, and gadget like toys tend to be the most advertised and talked about, but these are always stocked in toy stores in addition to the more traditional, simpler, types of toys - not as replacements for them.
Why is that? Well, because the very fact that modern toys can do more that traditional ones means that they leave less to a childs imagination - and all children love to use their imagination. A robot toy that has lots of flashing lights and which responds to basic voice commands has a limited scope for enjoyment. After the child has pressed all of the buttons on it, and got it to walk, turn around and stop, it becomes a case of "What do I do with it now?". On the otherhand, the cardboard box that the robot came in, simple as it may seem to adult eyes, can be imagined by a child to be a spaceship, which they can have all kind of adventures in.
The kids toys that will keep them entertained time after time are those that can be completely different each time they play. Some examples are blocks, boring dolls, dress up clothes, and child safe face paint and make up. Though a toy may look the same each time, they can incorporate it into wherever their imagination wants to take them.
My kids, even though I have a boy and a girl, want to turn everything into a sword. They assume the role of whatever takes their fancy at the time, with pirates, ninjas and superheros being particular favorites. Before I know it, their electronic toys are gathering dust in the house, and they are outside hacking at each other with tree branches while one defends the tree house ship from the marauding pirate below.
That leads to a warning about using imaginative kids toys. They can potentially get violent. So as with everything, keep watch over the kids so things so no one loses an eye. The lack of boundaries on their imaginations can soon have them defending their turf from imaginary invaders, or toppling huge stacks of blocks, or trying to paint the cat like a skunk. Be warned, once these little imaginations get going, they really, really take off.
For small babies, make sure the baby toys are soft. Even little babies will close a fist around objects placed in the palm. They don't have the motor control, however, to keep from hitting themselves in the face and body with their flailing arms. So be sure the baby will not harm itself with the toy by making sure it is soft, and does not have hard parts like buttons or eyes.
I hope you've started thinking about all the kids toys you can get for your kids that will set their imaginations free.
