Capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram is still better known by its colonial name, Trivandrum. Located on seven charming hills, the town possesses a beauty that is so heavenly. Though a buzzing, capital, Trivandrum has kept alive the old Kerala well. The typical red tiled pagodas are still in fashion. The winding lanes and pretty gardens are still very much a part of the town. Proximity to the Arabian Sea gives it a pleasant climate and makes the place even more charming. The presence of the Western Ghats gives it a hilly terrain and has dotted the entire region with numerous picnic spots. Owning some exotic beaches, an admirably long shoreline and mesmerizing backwater stretches, it is one heavenly land.

The spirituality that Trivandrum holds is also pretty visible to any visitor who tours the place. The entire city is dotted with numerous temples all over. A peculiar feature of these temples is their stunning architecture and typical design. The Dravidian and South Indian influence is clearly visible and stands out in a good way. It is good to note that Thiruvananthapuram has done well to preserve this heritage. The Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple here is a definitely a must visit for all. It enshrines an 18 feet idol of the deity which is lavishly adorned in gold an precious stones. The usage of gold, precious stones and rare herbs in the making of the idol has always created curiosity about the temple ever since it was erected.

The Kanakakunnu Palace is another noted place in Trivandrum known for its stunning architecture and historic value. Built by the Travancore King, the palace has hosted many royal banquets and was the best regal venue then. The later kings and princes added more to the palace. The tennis courts and gardens are later additions to the palace complex. The city even boasts of the first zoological park in India. Located within a Botanical Garden, the park is home to some rare animals, especially the Nilgiri Tahr, Asian Lion and Bengal Tiger. The park is still maintained well and is a good place to visit.

It is however the beaches in Trivandrum that are something one cannot afford to miss. Calm and secluded they are a haven for those who seek a break. The best known of these is the Shanghumugham Beach. Its charm has always attracted locals and tourists here. Seeing the crowds here, a good number of recreational and refreshment options have come up here.

Thiruvananthapuram is definitely a place worth visiting for the wholesome experience it offers.
