The holidays are definitely a time when people are thinking of givingto their family, their friends, and the organizations that have made a difference in their lives or the lives of those less fortunate. According to a Convio Survey released on November 30, 2010, 174 Million adult Americans are planning to donate to charities this year, resulting in an estimated $50 Billion in giving between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The question ishow is your organization preparing itself to take advantage of donor generosity?
Have you ever been holiday shopping and you have looked and looked for the perfect gift nothingthen while waiting in the check-out line, there it is-- a gift card to the store your mother will love or the perfect stocking stuffer for your husband. It's all about marketing--putting an attractive product right in front of the buyer. It's easy, its affordable, and its something that will provide benefit. You need to provide donors with a similarly simple solution. They may not want to look and look for an organization in need, but if one falls in their lap, they will support it. You need to provide them with easy options, here are a few.
Send an E-mail, Tweet, or Text Message Develop a warm holiday message telling them of organizational successes and encourage them to give a gift via a link (the simpler you can make this for the donor, the better!). You may want to include a short holiday video that provides photos and quotes from the customers using your services.
Update Your WebsiteEnsure that your website is updated with current news and a giving link right on the front page!
Include a Giving Link on your E-mail Signature Put a holiday message on your auto-signature for outgoing emails and include a link to your on-line giving.
Make giving Easy--Have giving information and remittance envelopes available in your lobby, at holiday functions, or any location that donors may frequent.
Direct Mail--If you have not prepared a collateral at this point, it may be too late for this year. But keep this in mind for future years.
Holiday GreetingsSend a holiday card with photos from your agency or for your major donors send something a little more meaningful, a handwritten note, a holiday plant, or a photo of them at a past holiday function.
Proper AcknowledgementWhile the holidays may be busy, ensure that you send prompt, heartfelt notes to each of your donors.
These are just a few strategies that you can employ to maximize your organization's fundraising efforts during the holidays. The key is to choose the right vehicle for your agency. Good Luck and Happy Holidays!
