You don't need me to tell you that with the housing market collapse and the general state of the economy, as a financial planner, realtor or independent contractor, things are tough. All the Fed is telling us that the recession is over and we are slowly climbing out, however, nothing seems to have changed for most of us. Finding houses to represent and getting people to trust us with their money is challenging to say the least.
Using Realtor Skills
Good realtors know that it isn't the house they are selling, they are selling themselves. It is the confidence and trust that is conveyed to the client that gets that person to list with you or search for a new home with you. It has little to do with the specific home. After all, if you are having a great time and show the client a house that isn't a perfect match but you convince him that he can create that dream, chances are you have a sale.
Those same skills, self promotion, an understanding of marketing, friendliness and enthusiasm can be turned to other business opportunities as well. Even better, there are some opportunities that will flourish no matter how badly the economy is doing at a particular time.
Financial Planner Jobs
Bernie Madoff has affected the financial planners of the world more than just about anyone else. It is difficult enough to convince people of the need for a financial planner to begin with, when someone in the field takes such advantage of their clients, it makes all of us look bad. Between the scandal and the economic downturn, finding work is nearly impossible.
Just because there is less demand for your skills in financial planning doesn't mean your knowledge is no longer valuable. Those same sales skills that you used to encourage people to trust you and follow your recommendations can be turned into a lucrative, online business instead.
Online Business Opportunities
The Internet is the hot spot for businesses right now. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, any company that is online has the potential of attracting clients and customers from around the corner and around the world. An understanding of marketing strategies is more important when you take your business online, but with former training as a financial planner, realtor or other sales related job you already know the basics.
Selling anything is about selling yourself. The real problem many new Internet entrepreneurs encounter is that too many opportunities are nothing more than glorified MLMs. If you know anything about such companies, you realize that unless you manage to get in at the start you are not going to be making much money.
Look for opportunities that provide you with the training to take your skills and convert them to an online market. You may not have a specific product you are already passionate about; sell whatever your mentor is selling until you learn the ropes. By that time you will know how to find your niche, market online effectively and what mistakes to avoid.
