Famous for tequila and the Aztecs, there is more to Mexico than what sits on the surface. Cancun is the tourist trap in the country, but if you want to see the real and authentic splendours of the country, then there are other places that you should aim for first.

Teotihuacn is best known for its two vast pyramids which preside over the town. The name means birthplace of the gods' and when you see it nestled in the Basin of Mexico, you can see why. The avenue of the dead was the main street in Teotihuacn, and ran between the pyramid of the sun and pyramid f the moon. When visiting, you should take a walk down and see the amazing history that surrounds the area.

Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most vibrant cities, and has a central, tree shaded square which provides respite from the heat of the sun here. Although culturally rich, it is one of the poorest areas in Mexico, and benefits from the tourism brought to the area. Make sure you visit Casa Oaxaca if you need refreshment; the traditional Mexican food is brilliant and presented with the most palatable wines. Try the tamales for authentic Mexican dining.

When travelling to Mexico, you will see there is more to the country than the worm in the bottle, or the spring break resorts that sit north, close to the border with America. If some of these roads less travelled take your fancy this summer, then what are you waiting for? Grab your guidebook and Travel Insurance, and get exploring the historical wonders of Mexico.
