Have you ever thought about being self-employed and getting paid well for what you enjoy doing? Or, are you stuck with the idea that you have to work for someone else? Self-employment seems natural to me. If you have a talent, then shouldn't you make the most of that talent and get paid for it? Of course you should.
Let's look at how one ordinary person cut the chains holding them to their desk and became a success as an entrepreneur and sole proprietor. It isn't all that difficult. Mostly what it takes is talent, courage, determination and a vision.
Here is my story of successful self-employment.
I suppose I have always been the type of person to challenge myself and aim high. My first career with the federal government was a good start, but wasn't nearly as satisfying as I needed. I saw people just coasting along, waiting for retirement. That seemed like a waste of life.
After a few years, I used my talents to get a job with a large consulting firm that needed someone with my experience. It was far more challenging for me, and far more rewarding. I wanted to create my own future with higher earnings and more possibilities, and that took a leap of faith to leave a "secure" government job and swim with the sharks in the private sector.
It wasn't too long before that big consulting firm was looking like the clumsy government agency where I had gotten my start out of college. I soon switched to a smaller consulting firm where the learning curve was steep, but the opportunities and rewards were even greater. This was a place where I sharpened my skills to achieve more success.
After a while, I moved on to another larger consulting firm where I had more responsibility and greater presence in the industry I was serving. Soon it felt like I was really a part of the industry and recognized for my abilities, not my company affiliation. I learned that business is done between people, not companies, and so the time was nearing for this person to get into a business of his own.
I wasn't happy with my current employment, but not ready to leave the security of the "mother ship" no matter how much the situation was trying to "push" me out the door. So, like many other employees, I stayed on.
Then, after a failed marriage that left me just about flat busted, I experienced a "pull" sufficient to get me off center. The poor management of my company was "pushing" me and the need to make more money was "pulling" me, so out the door I went.
Using the skills I honed over the years, and motivated by my financial needs, I set my eyes on financial independence, and put my nose to the grindstone in a sole proprietorship. In just 8 years, I had earned enough money to pay off all my debts, buy a nice estate outright, and put sufficient cash reserves in the bank to retire early.
Not bad for a guy who didn't want to leave the security of the "mother ship". I had learned a valuable lesson that there is no such thing as security, there is only opportunity -- and you have to seize it to be successful.
